  • The EUP for Midas® 50:50 (50% iodomethane/50% chloropicrin) was revised on September 10 by FDACS.  The revision to EUP No. 66330-EUP-37 allows fumigation to rates of 350 pounds per acre for certain uses as well as drip irrigation application.  It has been extended until the end of August, 2008.  For this particular product, people conducting experimental work must take guidance from the 18-page EUP label, the IFAS/UF policy (if conducted by IFAS), and must also be certified by the company for application.  (FDACS letter, 9/10/07).
  •  On August 10, the EPA announced that it will not initiate a special review for 2,4-D, 2,4-DB, or 2,4-DP based on extensive scientific review of many epidemiology and animal studies that, by weight of evidence, do not support evidence of carcinogenicity.  They also will terminate the special review of oxydemeton (Metasystox-R®) because mitigation measures are already in place.  (OPP Update, 8/10/07).
  • The comment period for fumigant use has been extended until November 3, 2007.  Please contact the PIO for further information if you have concerns or information.  (Federal Register, 8/24/07).
  • The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has prepared an environmental assessment for a proposed field test by LSU involving two genetically engineered strains of the bacteria, Burkholderia glumaeBurkholderia glumae is a plant pathogen that causes panicle blight in rice.  The purpose of this field test is to conduct experiments that will provide information on the pathogenicity of Burkholderia glumae and will assist in the development of control methods to reduce yield loss caused by panicle blight.  After assessing the application, reviewing pertinent scientific information, and considering public comment, APHIS has concluded that this field test will not present a plant pest risk, nor will it have a significant impact on the quality of the human environment.  Based on its finding of no significant impact, the APHIS has determined that an environmental impact statement need not be prepared for this field test.  (Federal Register, 8/14/07).
